On Assignment: start to finish part 2

2- sketch and release

Although I like my pencil sketches, I've developed a bad habit of tracing them over with a micron 03 ink pen and then scanning these through CorelTrace as bw 400dpi images. I then copy the traced image into Corel draw. This gives me control to enlarge, move, crop and otherwise manipulate the various elements of the image. I can also plunk in colours and see what works. Also, when I'm finished the whole book in this rough stage, I can more readily go back and rework the colours to flow better. Then they are basicall ready for me to dump them into PhotoPaint and do my majic (in this project I did not follow through with the final step as it is meant to have a flat feel).

This past month I've been working on a commission. Thought I'd share my painful process.

1- scribble (shown are a few pages of thumnails that I cranked out)

I spend a lot of time thinking about the story before I committ anything to scribbles. But once I have everything clear in mind I start doing page thumnails. These help me to focus on a style and to develop characters.
In this case, the first scribble became my inspiration for the whole project. In fact, even though that sketch was only about 5cm's tall, I blew it up to trace so I wouldn't loose the spontinaety.

Saw it last night. Good characters. But the storyline made me feel like they were just setting us up for the real thing next time. Good action though. And a very Star Treky story.

Believe me, I love pork. But, I actually got sick the monday after the big scare. Temperature of 102, aching joints and a splitting headache. I knew I didn't have Swine Flu. I hadn't been to Mexico and it was too soon for it to spread to 3rd parties.
I went into the drugstore and bought some flu pills. The way the cashier took my money and gave me my change was comical. These news items definitely create paranoia.

Life With My Wife: Part I

Recently I discovered garage band, which comes with your Mac. Had so much fun combining pre-recorded sounds, I couldn't stop. As an alternative to garage band, I trialled Mixcraft. Got off a half dozen mixes. It looks very much like garage band. Had a blast! www.acoustica.com/mixcraft/index.htm
